Crypto needs ‘enabling environment,’ Philippines central bank says

The Philippine central bank sees the potential of crypto to improve domestic and cross-border payments, but the authority is still negative to crypto as a legal tender. Amid the rising cryptocurrency adoption in the Philippines, the country’s central bank is seeking measures to better protect investors through elevating local crypto awareness. The Philippine central bank, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), wants to promote crypto education as the authority sees a lot of benefits associated with crypto and blockchain, a BSP representative said in an interview with Cointelegraph. “The BSP’s focus is on virtual assets’ capacity to improve the delivery of financial services, particularly payments and remittances services, as it has potential to provide faster and economical transfer of funds, both for domestic and international setting,” the BSP stated. According to the BSP, crypto adoption in the Philippines has increased over the past few years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, Bit...

Is it Bitcoin’s time to shine? British pound drops to all-time low against the dollar

The U.S. dollar has been the clear winner as investors seek shelter in the largest global economy, but could the British pound's weakness be a positive for Bitcoin. On Sept. 26, the British pound hit a record low against the U.S. dollar following the announcement of tax cuts and further debt increases to curb the impact of a possible economic recession. Gold-backed BRICS currency will be 'very hard' to deliver: Lyn Alden

A BRICS common currency will be challenging to initiate and maintain, though efforts to dethrone the US dollar could have an impact on Bitcoin, says investment strategist Lyn Alden. Macroeconomist Lyn Alden has cast doubt on a proposal that would see five countries work together to develop a common BRICS currency — arguing it will likely struggle to get off the ground and fail to dethrone the United States dollar. In an interview with Cointelegraph just days before the BRICS annual summit in South Africa, Alden explained that it will be “very hard” for BRICS members — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — to form a gold-backed currency for widespread use. Russian President Vladimir Putin first announced that BRICS proposal to create an international reserve currency at the BRICS summit in 2022 to rival the U.S. dollar as the global reserve standard. This proposal was later confirmed to come in the form of a gold-backed currency. However, Alden argued the model is flawed. ...

Image
Market analyst Charles Edwards says that while there are good reasons to exercise caution, investors’ risk off sentiments and expectation of a recession could be overblown. The U.S. stock market approaches a crucial turning point as uncertainty over inflation rises after hotter-than-expected economic data released in February. Despite mounting investor worries, the economy is showing signs of resilience that could protect against a significant downside move.  The escalating risk-off sentiment in the market is also creating volatility for Bitcoin (BTC). The leading crypto asset, which has had a strong correlation with the U.S. stock market, moved oppositely to the stock market in February. The correction between BTC and Nasdaq turned negative for the first time in two years. However, with the crypto bulls pausing at the $25,200 level, the risks of a downturn alongside stocks are increasing. While there’s certainly a reason to maintain caution until the release of new economic data and ...
