Tether Takes ‘Historic’ Step Towards Transparency With Full Audit and New CFO Appointee

The stablecoin issuer Tether has hired a new chief financial officer (CFO) and committed to completing a full audit. The veteran finance executive Simon McWilliams will now serve as CFO for Tether, which issues the dollar-pegged USDT, the top stablecoin by market cap. McWilliams will lead the stablecoin issuer toward a full audit and “spearhead Tether’s further commitment to transparency and regulatory readiness,” according to a press release from the firm. Tether didn’t provide a timeline for the audit. The firm already releases quarterly attestation reports with the accounting giant BDO, but it says a full audit will “ensure greater financial integrity and verification of reserves.” The stablecoin issuer has dealt with regulatory issues recently, including failing to gain compliance with the European Union’s new Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulations, which has led to crypto exchanges delisting USDT in Europe. Bitfinex, Tether shareholder paid $40K for Farage to visit Trump after rally shooting

Christopher Harborne, a shareholder in both Bitfinex and Tether’s parent company and a prominent right-wing backer, paid for Nigel Farage to visit Donald Trump following the failed assassination attempt against the former president.  That’s according to the UK Parliament’s latest register of interest filings, which details the financial interests of its politicians. It revealed that Farage’s trip to the US on July 17 cost £32,000 (~$41,500) and was funded by Harborne.  As reported by The Guardian, the trip was arranged for Farage “to support a friend who was almost killed and to represent Clacton on the world stage.” However, judging by the lack of photos of Trump and Farage together, it seems likely that the newly-elected member of Parliament (MP) never actually got to meet the 2024 presidential hopeful .  Farage has also been criticized by users on X (formerly Twitter) for the little time he has spent in his constituency. Clacton voters waiting for Nigel Farage’s first con...

Tether-owned Northern Data accused of fraud by former execs

In late 2023, Tether, the world’s largest stablecoin, announced it was taking a significant stake in Northern Data, a firm that principally focuses on Bitcoin mining but has since expanded into artificial intelligence. Since then, former executives of Northern Data ’s North American subsidiary have filed a lawsuit against Northern Data , alleging securities fraud and tax evasion, as well as whistleblower retaliation.  Joshua Porter, the former CEO and president of Northern Data US, the company’s North American subsidiary, and Gulsen Kama, the former chief financial officer of Northern Data US, filed the lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges that Northern Data regularly misrepresented its financial situation to investors, even as its executives, including Porter and Kama, raised concerns about the solvency of the parent company. These issues came to a head in early 2023 when KPMG insisted on performing a liquidity forecast before signing off on its audit. Kama felt that...

Worldcoin's orb revamp hopes to be less Black Mirror, more Apple

Controversial Crypto project Worldcoin is hoping that an Apple-style makeover of its infamous retina scanning orbs will help the company shed some of its dystopian image. Worldcoin orbs scan and upload people’s irises to its biometric database as a means to assign “World IDs” and become what it says will be the “world’s largest digital identity and financial network.” Users have previously received Worldcoin Crypto tokens as payment for their biometric data. However, the technology has been branded exploitative and deceptive by the MIT Technology Review. Users of the orb have reportedly called the project “dystopian” and “creepy.” Alex Blania, the CEO of Worldcoin’s parent company Tools for Humanity, told TechCrunch on Wednesday that their mission is to “race toward billions of users as fast as we possibly can.”  The orbs will change in color and shape in a bid to look “much more friendly.” He said the “next iterations will look quite different,” be “way [more] tuned down,”...

Evergrande сrypto сrash: Chinese giant’s impact on digital markets

Image
China’s Evergrande’s bankruptcy filing reverberates in the crypto markets, triggering significant drops in major digital assets and casting a shadow over Tether’s financial backing. Once the leading property developer in China, Evergrande has recently transformed into a prominent representation of China’s property crisis.  On Aug. 17, Evergrande sought refuge from debtors by filing for Chapter 15 protection under the US bankruptcy code. This provision assists non-US companies in shielding themselves during restructuring, keeping creditors at bay.  BREAKING CHINA’S SECOND LARGEST PROPERTY DEVELOPER EVERGRANDE HAS JUST FILED FOR BANKRUPTCY pic.twitter.com/ckgqu6zaDY — GURGAVIN (@gurgavin) August 17, 2023 Evergrande’s affiliate, Tianji Holdings, followed suit in Manhattan bankruptcy court. Tether CTO claims USDT price being manipulated, some suggest Binance involvement

Image
Tether and Bitfinex chief technology officer Paolo Ardoino voiced concerns over what, according to him, are signs that the USDT (USDT) stablecoin is being manipulated . In an Aug. 3 tweet, Ardoino explained that USDT is being pressured down by about 10 basis points (equivalent to 0.1%, or a price of about $0.99). Still, while one would expect USDC — arguably USDT’s main competitor — to gain from this situation, it is instead redeemed heavily while a very new competitor “is getting it all.” “Exactly! It feels definitely organic and not manipulative at all,” Ardoino concluded with a sarcastic remark. Stablecoin data suggests that Ardoino was most likely referring to a new stablecoin named First Digital USD (FDUSD) in his tweet. CoinMarketCap data for this stablecoin goes back until July 26 and shows a market cap of just $20.25 million on Aug. 2, just before a sudden explosion to its current market cap of $256.55 million. Tether bought commercial paper from subsidiary of alleged terrorist-linked bank

The recently revealed list of Tether’s commercial paper holdings has surprised many due to the firm’s significant exposure to Chinese banks. However, what may be more worrying is that Tether has also bought commercial paper from several banks with chequered records. Indeed, one of these banks is apparently a subsidiary of a Qatari bank known to breach AML regulations and service extremist and terrorist groups. Tether bought a total of $49,862,117 worth of commercial paper with an interest rate of 0.2765% from AKCB Falcon Limited, a subsidiary of Masraf Al Rayan. The Islamic bank is headquartered in Qatar and owned by the Qatari state with a branch in the UK. AKCB Falcon Limited was previously a subsidiary of Al Khalij Commercial Bank that merged with Masraf Al Rayan, creating the second-biggest bank in Qatar . Masraf Al Rayan was recently found to be in breach of AML rules by the UK financial regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), for accepting up to £23 mill...

Bitcoin Reclaims $18K: Is A Bull Run In Sight?

Image
This year has been pretty good for cryptos so far. Right from Altcoins rallying to the aggregate market cap ballooning, a bunch of positives have been noted. On Thursday, Bitcoin was, yet again, the talk of the town. The market’s largest crypto broke above $18k, one of its most rigid psychological barriers. After registering a 4.5% uptick over the past 24 hours, BTC was trading at $18.1k at press time. Source: TradingView Now, according to the latest data from Glassnode, a fairly large volume of BTC was acquired between $16.5k and $18.2k. The sharp spike noted by the supply in profit metric justified the same. Even though this might seem to be a positive, there is a gray lining to it. More than half the circulating supply was in loss in the period between November 2022 to early January 2023. Thanks to the current rally, over 13% of the said supply has now returned to profit. Like shown below, whenever this metric has seen a sharp rise, it has been succeeded by dramatic...
