US SEC Says Meme Coins Like Dogecoin And Shiba Inu Are Not Securities In Landmark Shift For Crypto

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said that meme coins like Dogecoin and Shiba Inu are not securities, marking a landmark regulatory shift for the crypto industry. The agency’s decision, outlined in a Feb. 27 statement, says meme coins are “akin to collectibles” rather than financial instruments subject to securities laws. “A meme coin is not itself a security,” the regulator said in a statement. ”Meme coins typically are purchased for entertainment, social interaction, and cultural purposes, and their value is driven primarily by market demand and speculation. In this regard, meme coins are akin to collectibles. Meme coins also typically have limited or no use or functionality.” The SEC’s guidance highlights a broader shift in US crypto regulation under the pro-crypto Trump administration, marking a departure from the regulation-by-enforcement approach of former chair Gary Gensler. “This is HUGE,” said The Ko...

Dogecoin Creator Billy Markus Responds After SEC Chair Gary Gensler Says Bitcoin (BTC) Is Not a Security

The co-founder of the original memecoin is calling out Gary Gensler after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chair said Bitcoin (BTC) is not a security. In a new interview with CNBC, SEC chair Gensler states clearly that BTC is not a security. “As it relates to Bitcoin, my predecessor and I have said that it’s not a security.” Bitcoin’s designation as a “non-security” places regulation of the flagship crypto outside the SEC’s jurisdiction. Responding to the news, Dogecoin (DOGE) creator Billy Markus took to the social media platform X to call out Gensler for not giving DOGE the same classification. “he should say dogecoin isn’t a security also as it is mostly bitcoin code and works exactly the same way” Gensler has yet to respond to the vocal DOGE co-founder. This is not the first time Markus has criticized Gensler’s performance as SEC chair. In December of last year, Markus responded to a Gensler claim ...

El Salvador celebrates Bitcoin anniversary: A year of ups and downs

Image
El Salvador’s first Bitcoin anniversary comes amid BTC losing over 60% of value in one year, but that doesn't really mean that the country’s Bitcoin experiment has failed. Sept. 7, 2022 marks exactly one year since El Salvador became the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin (BTC) as legal tender by enforcing the Bitcoin Law. Advocating for Bitcoin as legal tender last year, El Salvador President Nayib Bukele promised that Bitcoin adoption would benefit the 70% of the local population that had a lack of access to banking services as of 2021. The Salvadoran government also touted Bitcoin as a tool to attract foreign investment, create new jobs and cut reliance on the U.S. dollar in the country’s economy. One may question the current real benefits of Bitcoin Adoption in El Salvador as Bitcoin has lost roughly 60% of its value since the country adopted the cryptocurrency as legal tender. Exactly on this day one year ago, BTC was trading at around $46,000, according to data from...

Australian lawmakers send back crypto bill by Andrew Bragg

Introduced in March 2023, Australia’s bill on digital asset market regulation has faced a series of report delays by the Senate, and it's now been sent back for amendments. Australia’s Senate Committee on Economics Legislation has finally provided feedback to the cryptocurrency bill introduced by senator Andrew Bragg. The committee on Sept. 4 reported on the draft bill referred to as “The Digital Assets (Market Regulation) Bill 2023,” asking the bill authors to add some amendments. The Senate particularly concluded that it would pass the bill with minor amendments such as removing the term nonfungible tokens (NFTs) from the definition of regulated digital assets. Among other recommendations, the lawmakers asked the bill authors to exclude certain asset-based tokens — such as the Gold and Silver Standard and the BetaCarbon Token — from the definition of stablecoin. The Senate also asked to extend the transition period from three to nine months. In the report, the Senate also urged...

A missing link in social giving: A SocialFi platform based on the gold standard

Image
Tanzania gets a local crypto exchange to provide fiat off-ramp for crypto donations. While social giving is seen as a key element in supporting the international development agenda, managing donations requires end-to-end clarity on the movement of funds. In its current state, donation management lacks reliable traceability features, making it difficult for donors to understand how their contributions are being used. The lack of transparency, coupled with the inefficient bureaucratic processes of cross-border fund transfers, creates a barrier that discourages potential donors from reaching out to regions in need. Blockchain offers a dependable solution to the struggles encored by the social giving landscape. Because every transaction made on a blockchain is publicly traceable, donors can easily track where their donations end up. However, even with a reliable blockchain that provides transparency along the social giving process, there’s still a missing link in ensuring the recipient ge...
